Discord channels are what make the Discord application really fun and entertaining by adding camaraderie to your life. Be it a text channel chock full of memes and emojis or a voice channel with all the inside jokes and trash-talking. If you’re not in a channel, you’re not really on Discord.
“So how do I join the party?”
If you’re new to Discord this article will teach you how to join a channel. Adding to your experience, communicating with others is a great addition to your gaming fun. It’s also a great way for non-gamers to communicate with others.
Joining A Discord Channel
There are two scenarios you’ll find yourself in when wanting to join a Discord channel. You’re either already a member of the server it’s found on, or you’re not. I’m here to tackle both.
Launch the Discord app. You can either open the desktop application (if downloaded and installed) found in either the Windows menu (PC) or the Applications menu (Mac). If you’re like me, the shortcut is likely sitting in your taskbar or on your desktop. However, if you haven’t downloaded the desktop app, you can access Discord right through your web browser by heading to https://www.discordapp.com and logging in.Select the server you want from the list on the left side of your screen. It will be located just to the left of the main panel. Click on one of the icons to enter the server and have a list of channels displayed.Click on the channel that you would like to join. You may have to double-click. You can choose either a text chat channel, where you’re words are seen, and not heard or a voice chat channel. Text channels will be easily recognized by the # symbol located to the left of the channel name. When connecting to a voice channel, the quality of connection received will rely entirely on your ISP and the distance between yourself and the Discord server location. If you do join a voice chat channel, you may be prompted to allow Discord access to your microphone. You don’t need a mic to participate but don’t be that creepy guy lurking in the channel, listening to everyone else talk. Joining a channel means you will have to speak up at some point. If you aren’t a current member of the Discord server that hosts the channel, there are two primary ways to join. You either get an invitation link from a buddy or you go looking for one on the web. A Discord party without friends kind of defeats the purpose altogether.
This invite will likely come by the way of an email notification or a direct message on Discord, Twitter, or anywhere else chatting is permitted. You’ll have to copy the link provided to you as this is your golden ticket to the big time. Or, you know, just a Discord channel. To copy the link, highlight it, and press CTRL+C (PC) or CMD+C (Mac).Next, launch the Discord app (if you have it) or log in using your browser and the Discord web page.Once you’ve reached your Discord home page, check out the far-left side panel. You’ll see a dotted circle with a + sign at its center. If you’ve never joined a server before, it will be the only option listed aside from the Discord logo. Click on this icon and a popup will appear. You have two choices: Create a server (which is not what we’re here for) or Join a server. Go ahead and click on the green-colored Join a server button to the lower-right.Now you’re staring at a new window asking you to enter in the Instant Invite, while also providing you an example of what it may look like. If you’ve received the invite we mentioned early, this is where you’ll paste the URL. Paste the copied link into the provided text area either using CTRL+V (PC) or CMD+V (Mac) and then click the Join button. If you’re able, you can also right-click the text area and select Paste from the menu provided if that’s easier for you.Upon joining, you will be prompted to create a username. It doesn’t have to be the same as your DiscordTag but it may be best to make it something familiar and easily recognizable by your buds. Failure to do so could result in you accidentally being kicked before you can even get started.Joining a Discord server or channel on your mobile device is just as easy as doing so from the desktop application of a web browser. The interface of the two is relatively similar so following the same steps as listed above will help you to begin communicating within a particular channel or server.
Tap on either the Server or the + symbol to add a server (located on the left side of the application.
Tap on the available channels and join in on the conversations if you’re already in the server
or
Paste the Server URL by long-pressing in the input section of your screen. An option should appear for paste; tap it. Click to continue and proceed through the setup process as usual.
Just open up your browser and follow one of these links: https://www.discordservers.com/ or https://discord.me/. I found that DiscordServers.com doesn’t open well using the Mozilla Firefox browser. However, Google Chrome and Safari seem to work just fine.
For https://www.discordservers.com/:
From the homepage, click on Browse to look through an assortment of different servers. You can find it off to the right of the search bar. You could also use the search bar if you have a specific server filter in mind or select from some of the more popular filters provided on the page. You can scroll through the long list of Discord servers available to you. Clicking on a server that interests you will take you to that server’s information page. Here you’ll have the member count displayed and a bit of context on what the server is about. If you like what you see, click the Join Server button to the right.Once clicked, you’ll be redirected to the Discord browser page where you’ll need to login, to be admitted onto the server. You’ll be directed to the channel for which the link has been attached. For https://discord.me/:
You will immediately see servers to choose from right on the homepage. You can scroll from top to bottom and if none strike your fancy, simply click the Arrow button to head to another page full of more servers. There is a search function where you can enter keywords and filters or if you know them, the name of a Discord server. You can even click on the Recently Bumped Servers button to get a list of servers that have been given a recent push into the spotlight. You may notice that each of the servers has a rank attached to it (either Master, Platinum, or Diamond). This indicates that these servers were willing to pay for a few premium privileges to see their server towards the ‘front of the line’ so to speak. It’s all for an increase in exposure but if a server is willing to pay out of pocket, chances are they are very active and welcoming to newer members. When you’ve found the server for you, just click the Join Server button on their banner and a new tab will open in your browser. The page has been redirected to the Discord page where you can enter a username for the server and log in.You’ll be directed to the channel for which the link has been attached. There are a few other Discord server hosting websites such as https://discordservers.me/ and https://disboard.org/servers if you’d like to check them out. Regardless, you now officially know how to join a Discord channel.
There are a few reasons you may have difficulty joining a channel:
The invite link expired – Reach out to the server admins and request a new one.
Your code is invalid – Check that you have copied the correct invite code, these are case sensitive.
You’ve been banned – Even if you’ve created a new Discord account, the channel may be triggering your IP address as one on the ban list.
Server limit reached – Discord allows you to have access to 100 servers, if you’ve exceeded this limit you won’t be able to join without removing another server.
If the above-listed explanations don’t pertain to your situation you can always reach out to Discord Support.
